The caves in the city provided refuge to King Valagamba (also called Vattagamini Abhaya) in his 14-year-long exile from the Anuradapura kingdom. Buddhist monks meditating in the caves of Dambulla at that time provided the exiled king protection from his enemies. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the center of Theravada Buddhism for many centuries. It is believed that from the fourth century BC until the beginning of the 11th century AD it was the capital of the Sinhalese. During this period it remained one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia. The ancient city, considered sacred to the Buddhist world, is today surrounded by monasteries covering an area of over sixteen square miles.

With all the historical events taking place in Colombo, it was largely developed as a city following independence. However, the contributions made by the Portuguese, Dutch and British played a major role to what Colombo is today. The influences made by these nations are evident today in the food, clothes, lifestyle and even names used in this city. Even though today this wonderful city is much more modern and chic, it still resembles the glorious past. The city’s buildings, parks and monuments are living proof for that amazing history.
